The right path, but not the right pace - Executive Summary

Status of climate action and transition in Danish municipalities

This is a summary of the report “The right path, but not the right pace – Status of Climate Action and the Transition in Danish Municipalities”, prepared by CONCITO, with contributions from C40, for the Climate Alliance.

Denmark is a global frontrunner in local climate action. All Danish municipalities have ambitious climate plans and are working to turn them into concrete local action. Almost half are currently updating their plans, and more than 1,000 climate initiatives are underway across energy, transport, buildings, land use, and climate adaptation.

However, the report also highlights a key challenge: Denmark needs to accelerate the green transition significantly to meet its climate ambitions. Municipalities need better conditions to succeed, including clearer legislation and responsibilities, fewer financial constraints on local action, and more flexible and stable frameworks for public transport and green energy.
